MULBERRY LAUNCHES SWIMWEAR COLLECTION

The well-known brand for handbags, under the direction of the new Creative Director Emma Hill,  has taken a leap into swimwear and specifically bikinis. The collection is limited to two different styles at the moment, with inspiration taken from the English woodlands. The prints are earthy, with a slight hippy twist in the coloring and peace symbols. Both styles are available in stores and online in July, as part of the Autumn/Winter pre-collection.

AMBER CHAIR

In the fast-paced society and throwaway culture we live in it is nice to see a piece of product design that counteracts all of that. The Most Loved item of week AnOther Fashion Director Cathy Edward’s Amber Chair designed by Jaeuk Jung, conserves a decaying antique chair whilst in turn making a new contemporary piece of furniture. “The time that has passed by has a sublime beauty that exceeds the object,” explains Jung on his creation. Layers of time are fossilised within the essence of amber whilst both preserving the object and memories.

In art we have had Damien Hirst’s formaldehyde animals and Marc Quinn’s frozen blood sculpture, however what this Amber Chair achieves over the previous examples is beauty and functionality. It acts as both and art object and piece of furniture, with a timeless quality. Here we speak to Edwards about furniture and if she could preserve anything what it would be.

Where did you find this Amber Chair?
I've been doing a few home improvements and was looking for good furniture sites and came across this.

Why did you decide to Love it?
I thought it was unusual and beautiful. I also think the picture of the girl sat with her back to us is lovely.

Created by designer Jaeuk Jung using amber as a way of preservation – if you could conserve anything what would it be?
I would conserve this freakishly nice Easter weather and make it last all summer!

An incredible chair design – what is your favourite piece of furniture (that you own) and are there any particular pieces that you want to own?
Probably a 1920s deco table I got on Craigslist that came from New York and has a wood effect tin top. Its a really great design and was only £100. I would like to get a couple of great armchairs. I don't think the Amber Chair would be comfortable enough though.

What is on your wish list for this season?
My wish list for the season is a pair of knee-high Prada boots and a Givenchy bomber jacket.

What was the last thing you bought?
A welsh blanket from Jane Beck. I'm obsessed with them.

What is your favourite online shop?
At the moment John Lewis for everything domestic and baby related.

CHRIS BENZ TALKS ABOUT THE CRAZY FASHION CALENDAR

Dear Chris,

Every time I go to Style.com it feels like there’s another fashion season taking place. Pre-fall, resort, pre-spring…how do you keep up? And why are the seasons broken up like that?

–Avid Reader

Dear Avid Reader,

The fashion calendar is definitely confusing. Not only do the seasons move faster and faster, but at any one time, everyone is working on three or four overlapping seasons. For example, right now at the CB studio we are entrenched in Fall 2011 production fittings, just finished Spring 2011 and shipped to stores, and are developing Resort 2012.

We produce three collections each year, however bigger companies produce many more than that. In fact, some contemporary companies deliver more than 16 new collections per year! In fashion, its always about providing newness and excitement for the customer, and particularly in economically trying periods, a good dose of freshness on the retail floor is even more necessary! Just when you thought orange was the color au courant, acid green lands on every retail floor. Voila!

Pre-collections were developed as a tool for more commercial pieces to be on the selling floor preceding the delivery of the runway collections, thereby supporting and filling out the merchandising mix on the racks. It’s not hard to imagine how more and more “runway” style pieces snuck their way into the pre-collections, causing them to appear as directional collections unto themselves! Additionally, the pre-collections have the longest life retail-wise, nearly an entire month longer on the floor than the main collections prior to markdown.

It’s a mad, mad world, but once you wrap your head around the scheme it all seems to flow together nicely!

KAELEN FARNCOMBE WAS INSPIRED BY CHASING TORNADOES

When Fashionista.com asked her how did tornado chasing inspire her collection? she said :
When we (her brother Travis, her other brother Matt, and her boyfriend Simon) really started to see some big storms, it was so interesting–the way the sky looks and the clouds turn into something so menacing so quickly. I came away with the most beautiful photographs–the colors were stunning. I was inspired by the weather–the colors, the momentous shift from calm to chaos that happens in a split second. I wanted to translate that into my collection, keeping the pieces clean and modern with an element of something gritty and surprising. I used a much lighter and more tonal color palette, which I find more interesting because it allows for a lot of mixing of textures, fabrics and prints without getting too distracting.
